Color Blocking-Nails

Hey it's Gabby...
So I've been debating to call this Manicure Monday or Nails of the Week (NOTW). I don't know, I usually like to keep my nails the same for at least a week or If I'm too lazy or not inspired I keep it longer. We shall see...for now I guess it will be NOTW :)

I know I'm behind, but a big trend for Spring/Summer '11 is color blocking. Color blocking is taking two or more colors and pairing them together. It can be complimentary colors or off the wall combinations. Not only have I seen this trend translate on to clothing but also handbags, accessories and of course nails :)

I remember when I was younger, I would never have had my nails painted one solid color. I always used two or three colors on each nail either going diagonally, horizontal, or vertical. All my friends in school would give me compliments on my nails, especially since most of them weren't into polish like I was. If only my mom understood *shaking my head* . She would always get mad at me because my room always stunk of nail polish and nail polish remover. I couldn't help it, I needed to see how the color combinations looked and if I didn't like it then I had to start over.

I've seen gurus and some nail bloggers incorporate this trend by doing it with coloring the nail one color and then tip another color(which I've done). Another way, is by literally drawing blocks of colors on the nail. Personally, I don't think there's a right or wrong way, the choice is yours. Below I'll show you some different ways to color block your nails and you decide which one you like the best.

Here is my look for the week
CG-Purple Panic as base (I'm obsessed) *From Kourtney: She tried to steal mine several times before she got her own bottle*  & Pure Ice-No Means No on tip
Inside with flash

Outside(a little overcast) haha you can see my shoe :)

More french tip options which I love

Some options inspired by clothing I saw in magazines

So what do you think? Is this something you would try and incorporate in your wardrobe or on your nails? I know some of these colors might be too bright for some. Just remember you don't have to use the same colors I did. Use colors that compliment you and that you feel comfortable using. Remember it's just polish, have fun with it :)

Milani One Coat Glitter

Hey it's Gabby...
Today I have to show you Milani's One Coat Glitter in 521 Red Glitter. When I first saw this I was really excited. It was just full of glittery goodness. I was, however, a little hesitant to use it because I thought it would be like most glitter polished. You know the kind I'm refering to, the ones that require multiple coats of polish just to get it to look like it does on the bottle. I was WRONG!! I'm glad it lived up to it's name, One coat glitter.
Milani One Coat Glitter-521 Red Glitter
One coat w/out top coat
Up close pic-you can still see through it a bit
Two Coats w/out top coat
Up close-you can't see through it
The final look-two coats of Red Glitter with
Seche Vite Top Coat
I do have to say that there were two things I didn't like about the polish. The polish to me, felt very gritty almost sand paperish and it had a matte finish. However, once I added the first coat of Seche Vite, it got a bit smoother and the sparkles just came to life. Still, one coat of top coat wasn't enough. I ended up using three coats of top coat just to get polish feeling smooth.
That being said, I think the polish is great and wore well. I could not stop looking at my nails. I was in a glitter trance everytime I cought a glimpse of them lol. They reminded me of the red slippers Dorothy wore in the Wizard of Oz. "There's no place like home, there's no place like home." I do highly recommend getting this polish. You can find it at your local drug store, grocery store, discount store or wherever Milani is sold.

MyPoints

Hey everyone!

I was sitting here watching Extreme Couponing (ADDICTED!) and ever since the first time I tuned in I have been clipping coupons. I love bargain shopping and sharing my deals just like I like to share my beauty tips and tricks. So that reminded me of the awesome website MyPoints and how I have benefitted from being a member.

A few years ago my younger sister was visiting and I actually turned in points I earned from the e-mails they send etc and I ended up get a $25 Olive Garden gift card. That helped alot because my sister is a college student so money is tight and we love Olive Garden (even if they don't fill my sippy cup with a margarita).

Well a few months ago I was browsing their rewards section because I have about 3,500 points to spend. I turned them in for a $25 Sally's gift card. WINNING!!! I got about 8 bottles of nail polish when they had their buy 2 get 1 free special and used my gift card!

So I just wanted to share it with all you readers in case you're on a budget. Mypoints is definately a legit site and they have awesome rewards and it's super easy to get points!

If you decided to sign up let them know pinkladie2002@yahoo.com told you about it!

OPI Silver Shatter

Hey it's Gabby,
As many might have heard, there's this little nail trend going on with Shatter/Crackle polish. Maybe you've heard of it before? If not, then you must keep reading and if you like what you see below, then you must hunt them down and purchase them. The first one that caught my eye was the black Shatter polish from OPI that came out with the Katy Perry collection sometime at the end of last year. Shortly after, China Glaze came out with six similar polished called Crackle polish, but were offered in six different colors. Both shatter/crackle do the same thing, they make this cool pattern when you paint over a completely dry base color. I know I haven't done a post on the other polishes but I will do so eventually.
I, like many of you, subscribe to nail blogs and read somewhere that OPI would be releasing more Shatter polishes but in different colors. I saw that there would be a white shatter, red shatter, several shades of blue shatter and a silver shatter polish. The first one to come out I believe was a white shatter which came with a collection inspired by Serina Williams. I didn't buy the white because I had one similar from China Glaze. Just to let you know, I basically would stalk the blogs to see who had the scoop on release dates or more info on other Shatter polishes. Finally, I noticed posts about this new collection coming out from OPI. This new collection was inspired by the upcoming movie from Disney called Pirates of the Caribbean: Stranger Tides. The colors in that collection are very pretty but the one that I really wanted was the Silver Shatter polish.
After continuing my investigation, I started noticing youtubers and bloggers posting swatches of the collection and mentioning that it would be out sometime in May. After digging some more, I found that this new collection would be possibly coming out Sunday, May 8th (yesterday) As with other collections, I knew that more than likely they would be carried by ULTA, Trade Secret and JCP Salons. This time, instead of hunting down the polish i simply called the JCP Salon closest to me and asked if they had the Silver Shatter. The nice girl who answered said they did have it but it wouldn't be out on display for sale until Monday which is today. I told her that I'd been looking for this polish and needed it,if I could come by and purchase it. After checked quickly to see if I could stop by, she said yes. Yeeeeey!!! I quickly texted Kourt and asked if she wanted me to grab her one too, of course she said yes, and off I was to get our polishes.
Being Mother's day and all, I had plans to meet up with family to celebrate all the wonderful women in my life. I was ready to head out but I just had to try this polish out. I needed a base coat that dried quickly and the only one that came to mind was my China Glaze Purple Panic. I did one coat of Purple Panic because of lack of time and put OPI Silver Shatter over top.
I know what you're saying, enough already get to the pictures. I just want to let you know that the Silver Shatter has a different consistency than the Black Shatter or Crackle polishes. If you have those, you'll know that they are a bit thick and don't have shimmer. The OPI Silver Shatter is the opposite, it's thinner and has a lot of shimmer. Just to inform you, bottles do come with instructions since there's a specific way to apply the shatter polish to get best results. Another thing that's cool about the shatter polish, is that not all the nails will look the same. You can add a thick coat or a thin coat and a get a different look. Make sure that the base color you is is COMPLETELY dry and then apply the Shatter polish. Once the Shatter is dry, then you can add you're favorite top coat to seal the look. Below you will see two different looks using the OPI Silver Shatter, one by me and the other done by Kourt.
Here's what the OPI Silver Shatter polish looks like

Look at all that shimmer

And another shade picture with Top Coat

What do you all think? If you like these two looks, I would highly recommend calling the retailers above before driving around to see if they have the shatter polish in stock. I have a feeling that this may be as popular if not more than the black Shatter or Crackle polishes. Hope you can get it and come out with some cool color combos :o)

Manicure Monday: Salon Hansen Salon Effects

Hey everyone! Kourtz here :)  I feel like I haven't written anything in a long time! Hopefully that will change. I have some blog ideas for the future and we have our great giveaway going on!

So while I was sick painting my nails was the last thing on my mind. The first day they cleared me to drive on my own I rushed over to Walmart and got 2 boxes of Sally Hansen Salon Effects after coveting them in the magazines I was reading.

Now there is a broad spectrum of designs and colors and it's great because if you are in a hurry and need to present yourself in a put together manner then you can get these strips and you don't even have to wait for it dry! Love it!! I have never been one to wear just a plain color of nail polish, I have to have it different because I am different lol! When I opened the package I noticed the nail polishy smell haha which Gabby responds "That's because it's real nail polish Kourtney" LOL She would probably add dummy after that but oh well! ANYWAYS! These are so flexible and so easy to apply to the nail and form it to the shape of your nail. And let's be honest, it looks like you went to a salon and paid bookoos of money to get a fancy design. Plus the compliments you get on them don't hurt either (I received tons).

I went with the Laced up and Misbehaved choices. I applied the Laced Up first and I love it because it's girly but edgy at the same time. It applied soo easy and only took me about 30 minutes to do both hands (just cuz I am OCD about getting it perfect haha). I applied Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat afterwards to just seal it and give it that extra layer to protect the design. So without further adieux here is Laced Up...

(After the 10 days

Pretty huh? I got amazing results with these. I wore the manicure for the full 10 days that's advertised and it really held up. I am super rough on my nails too so the fact that this barely chipped just amazed me!

I was hoping to get the same results with the Misbehaved option. Yeah, not so much. Now I know I applied it right but it just didn't want to stick to my nails and it chipped almost instantly, even with the Seche Vite top coat on. I wore it for the 10 days and it just didn't look pretty at the end. Who knows, maybe I got a dud batch :/ Here it is before it got all chippy...

I still love these and I got 3 more designs which include the Skinny Jean, Show your Stripes and Don't Get Catty. I like these alot because I can be lazy haha!! If you're not so good at doing the fancy designs then I say go for these! My little sister got the Laced Up and she also said it was easy and she loves them! She wants more now too haha!

Let us know what you think of these! Did you have any problems? Which design do you love the most and want to try? Leave us your answers in the comment section!

Have a great start to your week everyone!!!

Manicure Monday-Pink Blooms

Hey it's Gabby,
I mentioned in my last post that I was going to wear my San Antonio Spurs mani for a good while, which I did until they lost on Friday. :o( That was a very stressful game, but it's ok, they had an amazing season. I guess it just wasn't meant to be a win for the Spurs.
So, since I had to change my polish, I decided to finally use my Bundle Monster plates I bought months ago. I guess I was hesitant because I heard BM plates worked better with Konad special polish, which I have none. I did however hear that regular polish worked fine but that the image might not be as dark and that your best bet was to use metallic shades. It's all trial and error and playing with different color combinations and seeing which regular polish's give the best image.
I knew I wanted to do something girly and floral since it's spring time. After many tries, this is what I came up with.
For base color I used 2 coats of Ulta brand limited edition nail lacquer in Noel (this polish is so streaky but I love this pale pink color-you probably could do 3 coats and not see the streaks).

I stamped image with China Glaze Emotion

I used the Rose from Bundle Monster Image Plate 14

Then I used 1 coat of
Seche Vite
Hope you enjoy this nail look. I promise to do more looks with my Konad and Bundle Monster Image Plates :)
